Archive for the Site Info Category

BangorBaby is back! When I started this site, more than four years ago, it was a wordpress hosted site to help me keep track of information as I was awaiting my first daughter. Then I had her, finished a graduate degree, went back to work, and as she got bigger, I posted less and less, because, well, she wasn’t a baby anymore! With a brand new Bangor baby in our house, and realizing there’s a whole lot for big kids, too, I’m back in the saddle.

A lot has changed in the world of blogging — there’s a trend towards more transparency, for one, so I plan on adding a little more of my own voice and personal experiences to what I post here. I also hope to foster some more discussions, here, and on the brand new BangorBaby facebook page. I’ve also updated the information in the tabs above — instead of trying to keep track of every event and storytime on those pages, I’ve added general information, and I’ve expanded beyond Bangor for most categories. If there’s something I’m missing, please, please, let me know!

I don’t make any money doing this (yeah, there’s some Google ads, but after years of having them, they’ve added up to less than $24 — so, really, I’m not getting rich from Google!) and do it mostly as a labor of love and service to the community. If you want something added to the calendar, there are two ways to do it. If it’s a one time event, email it to me, and I’ll add it to the BangorBaby calendar. If it’s an ongoing event — a music class, for instance — creating your own public Google Calendar, and letting me know about it will be the easiest way to keep information current on BangorBaby. To make it as easy as possible, I’ll even help you create the calendar! Email me for details on how to get started.

I plan on posting regular weekly updates, with ideas for what to do with the coming weekend, as well as some general “Life in Bangor” updating. And if YOU have an idea for a post, and would like to help out, please, let me know! The more that contribute, the more that benefit.

Spring has finally (dare I say it?) SPRUNG! With great weather, the playgrounds are getting heavy traffic, and BangorBaby is coming out of hibernation.

The Maine Discovery Museum is getting a new exhibit, scheduled to open in May, and soon fresh woodchips will be spread under swingsets around town. If you have any events or news or tips for the website, email them to me at bangorbaby AT gmail DOT com.

Happy Spring!

There are many activities for children and families that are held throughout the week, during typical business hours, but finding activities for a family with parents who work typical business hours is more challenging. Because of that, I’ve added a new category for working parents, for the resources and activities that would work best with their schedules.

There are a few changes ’round here, most notably the blog is at the front of the site now, but I’ve added pages for the most searched information — those are in the tabs above. Click on BangorY and find out what’s going on for babies & kids at the Y. Click on Calendar to see the event calendar, listing storytimes, support groups, and special events. Playgrounds introduces the playground repository, housed on flickr. Coming soon, Maine Discovery Museum information. As always, let us know if there’s something you’d like to share, or something you’d like to see!

Happy Spring! I’ve spent naptimes this weekend doing some upgrading around here. First, the blog has a new, springier feel, don’t you think? I’ve also tweaked with the code in the forums to prevent spambots from registering and posting. New forum members will register, receive an email (instantly) and click on that before posting. We hate spam, here!

The new project is to document the playgrounds in Bangor. To this end, I’ve created a flickr account, at http://flickr.com/photos/bangorbaby/ that I plan to use to add photos of the city’s parks and playgrounds. If you’d like to contribute, and are a flickr user, tagging your photos with “bangorbaby” will get them into the stream!

The other cool thing that I’m doing with flickr, is generating a map that links with the photos. Check it out at http://flickr.com/photos/bangorbaby/map and use it to plan your next outing!

As always, let me know if there’s something I’ve overlooked, or if info needs to change. I do my best, but nobody’s perfect!

As an expectant mom, it’s been a challenge to track down all the information I’ve been seeking throughout the experience, so I wanted to create a resource for other expectant and new moms (and dads!) to find what they need easily. I hope someone finds it valuable!
